PSMA Listserve

PSMA currently offers a Listserve exclusively for the use of our Members.

WHAT IS A LISTSERVE?
A listserve is a software program that allows individuals with common interests to interact via e-mail. Listserves are the ideal virtual networking tool. From your office or home, you can e-mail business-related questions and ideas to your peers and receive their responses and feedback-usually within minutes.

BENEFITS OF A LISTSERVE

  • Network and obtain first-hand advice on industry-specific issues you are facing.
  • Pose a question once and have it delivered to all subscribed listserve members-a substantial audience for feedback.
  • Receive responses via e-mail within minutes of posting your message.
  • Get involved in a "virtual community of interest" where you can share your knowledge and experiences to benefit others and the industry. The only technical requirement for participating in a listserve is a working e-mail account. Sign up today!

HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR THE LISTSERVE?
Please contact Dan Reilly, PSMA Manager, at (toll free) 866-739-0277, ext. 223 or e-mail: dan@psmanet.org to join the PSMA Listserve.

You can receive listserve messages in two ways: "Real Time," in which you receive individual messages as your peers send them to the listserve, or "Digest," where once a day you receive all messages posted to the listserve as one document. Initially subscribers to the listserve are registered to receive "Real Time" messages. If you wish to change to "Digest" or from "Digest" back to "Real Time" at any time, please contact PSMA at (toll free) 866-739-0277, ext. 223 or e-mail: dan@psmanet.org, to request the change.

HOW DO I UN-SUBSCRIBE FROM THE LISTSERVE?
To un-subscribe from the listserve, e-mail your request to dan@psmanet.org.

HOW DO I POST OR ANSWER A QUESTION ON THE LISTSERVE?

Original Post

You must be a PSMA member and subscribed to the listserve in order to post a question.

When you wish to post a question or initiate a discussion, begin by starting a new e-mail message. Enter the e-mail address for your PSMA listserve group:

psma@psma.listserve.us (for PSMA Members)

Be sure that your subject line includes a concise title clearly identifying your topic. If you are posting a long message, please warn the other subscribers with a statement at the top of the message, such as "WARNING: LONG MESSAGE."

Please note: A listserve will only accept messages posted from the e-mail address the member used to subscribe. If, for example, you subscribe to the Membership Listserve from your e-mail account at work and then you attempt to post a message to the listserve from your account at home, your message will bounce back to you with an error message. However, you may subscribe to the listserve from both your home and work e-mail accounts if you would like the flexibility of posting from either location.

Signature
Always remember to include a full "signature" block at the bottom of the messages you post so other subscribers will know who you are and how to reach you directly should they have documents or confidential responses for you.

Replying to Posted Messages
If your response to a posed question or topic is informative and would benefit everyone participating on the listserve, send your reply to everyone. However, avoid re-sending the entire message to which you are replying. Cut and paste the relevant parts of the original message into a new e-mail message with your responses and address the message to the listserve group. Please do not re-send the entire original message back to the listserve.

Remember: When you click on "reply" to a posting, your response is sent to the entire listserve. If you wish to send a confidential response to a member, address a new message directly to that individual.

If your reply is simply a request to receive a copy of what someone has offered to share, or simply to agree with someone (such as "Me, too"), please do not reply to the entire group. Instead, send your response directly to the person who posted the message by clicking your "Forward to" button and typing in or cutting and pasting in the e-mail address of that individual.Note: PSMA listserve is not set up to accommodate attachments. If you wish to send a document to a listserve member, you will need to send an e-mail with an attachment directly to that person.

NETIQUETTE TIPS
If you are new to listserves, please review the following tips regarding Internet etiquette (aka netiquette).

  • Most listserves frown on members promoting themselves or posting commercial offers or promotions to the group.
  • Please keep your messages relevant to the listserve's topic and membership.
  • If you have a comment relevant to only one member, e-mail the individual privately instead of posting your comment to the entire listserve.
  • Text typed in all uppercase letters is the Internet equivalent of shouting.
  • When quoting a previous post, delete all but the relevant portions of the text.
  • Some e-mail systems offer an "autoreply" option to notify others when you are not in the office. If your e-mail system has such a feature and you will be away for an extended period, please change your PSMA listserve option for receiving message to "Digest" until you return. Autoreply can create problems for the listserve software, barraging listserve participants with "out-of-the-office" messages.
  • It is customary to include a brief introduction of yourself in your first posting to the listserve. Members sometimes feel more comfortable about contributing after they have observed for a week or two and developed a feel for the "tone" of the listserve and the interests of the other members.

WHERE DO I ACCESS AND REVIEW PREVIOUS LISTSERVE POSTINGS?
If you are interested in seeing if a particular interest/topic has already been discussed or if you would like to review useful information from a past discussion, you can search for and retrieve previously posted messages by visiting the online archives for your listserve group:
